What To Watch
The Band That Wouldn't Die, ESPN America, 7pm On an obscure channel, we grant you, but rather a fascinating and touching documentary this, from Barry Levinson - who directed Rain Man and The Natural and was the exec producer of Homicide: Life On The Street. In 1984, the owner of the Baltimore Colts American Football team suddenly, and covertly, transferred the franchise to Indianapolis - literally in the dead of night with secret removal vans - ripping the heart out of this proud but economically depressed city etc. Improbably enough to British eyes, this film tells the story of the team's half-time marching band, die-hard supporters of the team to a man and woman. Their reactions to the betrayal and loss of their team are gripping viewing, and there's a brilliant caper element to the tale, with the band getting a tip-off from a sympathetic drycleaner that a particular lorry could be kicked to make their uniforms fall off - and then the story of how the band played on.
Shrink Rap, More4, 10pm | If there's one thing you can't say about dear old Heather Mills it's, "she's had an uneventful life". Simpering psychologist Pamela Connolly tries to hear the full story and attempts to get under her skin when she gets on the couch. Heather talks freely about her leg, her family and tells a fair few tear-jerking stories (none about Sir Paul 'cause of their settlement). It's strange and unsettling to watch the two shrunk-faced middle-agers trying to exploit each other. There's a snake staring at its prey ready to strike - but you can't tell which is which.

Natascha: The Girl In The Cellar, FIve, 8pm
Poor Natascha Kampusch - stuck in a cellar for 10 years by an evil kidnapper. You escape, have your moment in the sun, and then your story is trumped by the Fritzls. It's heartening to hear her give this interview about how her life has moved on.

What To Eat
Jerusalem Artichoke Soup
From our friend Garlic Confit
I love Jerusalem artichokes. I like them, roasted, sautéed, grated raw. My favourite way to eat them is soup. This is my recipe that has been honed over the years.
500g Jerusalem artichoke, peeled and cut roughly (keep in water to stop discolouration) 700ml light chicken or vegetable stock 1 small red onion 1 shallot 1/2 leek 1 clove garlic 50g butter 1/2 cup full fat milk 4 tbsps marsala or other sweet/fortified wine 5 peppercorns 1/2 tsp salt
Chop the onion, leek and shallot. Soften in the butter. Add garlic and continue to cook without browning.
Add the artichokes and all the other ingredients - except the milk and marsala - bring to the boil and simmer for 35 mins.
Add the milk and marsala and bring back to the boil and simmer for another 10 mins.
Blend. You should have a thick soup the consistency of single cream with lots of black flecks of pepper. Check the seasoning and adjust as you see fit.
I always top off with garlic croutons and extra pepper.

Bonus Bite
tvHate
By Steve Charnock
QI BBC1, Friday, 8.30pm Ah, QI. It's the televisual equivalent of punting down the Thames in a top hat and tails, isn't it? It's an afternoon spent leisurely playing croquet with Mater and Pater, drinking cups of Earl Grey and reading PG Wodehouse. It's everything this proud nation stands for isn't it? Well, yes it is. This is the nation of intellectual snobbery, extreme pedantry and Gyles Brandreth after all. Stephen Fry is a funny, charming man. All you must do to retain that image of him is remember he's a (quite) good author, he was in A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Blackadder and the less twee of his recent documentaries (obviously block out Kingdom, his crashingly dull Twitterisms and his shameless, omnipresent advert ho-ing).
The format, a simple panel game, works well enough and, along with some often genuinely interesting topics, it gives enough opportunities for some for the better guests to put their amusing spin on it and make for agreeable, if slightly passive, watching. So why does it feature in tvHate? [Deep breath] Well... It's Jonathan Creek and his 'Cutesy Little Brother' act or whatever it is he's trying to do by consistently failing to grasp the basic idea of the show for 'comedic' effect, much to the hilarity of the fawning, hyperactive studio audience. It's a Quite Interesting fact that 98% of Davies's laughs are achieved by acting out a simplified version of another panelist's joke again and again and again, all the while looking like Anita Roddick in a particularly loud and ill-fitting blouse. Sitting there grinning, acting like a black hole swallowing up all the jokes and trivia, a comedy anti-catalyst extraordinaire, the anti-Midas of the one-liner. He is consistently, no always the least funny, the most annoying participant and yet, he's always there. He's the one constant. He's ALWAYS there. He's enough to make you wish your left eye was blind. tvHate wouldn't point any of this out to him of course. We value our ears far too much to do that.
