Friday! Holidays in the sun lead to Madness and more (02/10/2009)
Thank Heavens that's over. It was totally exhausting. Okay, we didn't get a lot done but next week will take care of that, right? Now, who's going to the pub?
What To Watch

Benidorm, ITV1, 9pm
tvBite has always found Sheridan Smith much warmer and funnier doing interviews for any of her low-rent shows (Royle Family apart) than she actually is on screen. So it's a mixed blessing to see her parachuted in to the first ep of the third series of ITV's flagship (only) sitcom. She donates a wiggle and a rasping scouse accent to the hour-long special, which adheres to the sitcom formula in its strictest sense. It's very much a series of set pieces linked by location. Some of the set pieces make you want to crush the writers' knuckles with a hammer (an out-of-control toy hovercraft chasing a Spanish waiter); while others are undeniably amusing (Johnny Vegas's character getting irritated by the stupid crossword answers). The good moments (mainly coming from the impressive cast) make you realise that there's something in there that makes it all worthwhile.

Madness, BBC4, 9pm
If you don't like Madness, there's something wrong with you. If you don't think you like Madness, watch The Liberty Of Norton Folgate, BBC4, 10.40pm (better than the Glasto performance, BBC4, 9pm) and you should change your mind. Suggs's lyrics are so good you can forgive him Night Fever (if you can remember it) and the music is so joyful, it can make you forget your British reserve. There's a documentary Young Guns Go For It, BBC4, 10pm in between. Madness make the world a better place.

Friday Night With Streisand And Ross, BBC1, 9pm
Intriguing early night special between the two big earners. Funny Girl's first interview this century.
Also... Chwis Packham and Kate Humble are back on Autumnwatch, BBC2, 9pm and Peep Show, C4, 10pm recovered from a shaky start. Tough Guy Or Chicken, BBC3, 9pm is all about catching snakes in Bangladesh.
What To Eat

Chicken garlic with lemon and rosemary
With thanks to Nicholas Clee

4 chicken thighs
4 drumsticks
1 mug chicken stock (half a cube)
50g butter
Olive oil (or vegetable, if you prefer)
1 lemon, quartered
1 head garlic, separated into cloves
Sprig rosemary

Salt the chicken and brown gently in a large pan in the butter and oil.

Add the stock, lemon, garlic, and rosemary.

Cover, and simmer over a low flame for 30 minutes. Uncover the pan, and allow the sauce to reduce until it is syrupy.

Serve with sautee potatoes.

Weekend watch

SATURDAY

The Three Lives Of Gandhi, BBC3, 8.15pm
New documentary series. Fascinating tale about how a religious outcast became, well, Gandhi.

Monty Python: Almost The Truth - The BBC Lawyers' Cut, BBC2, 9.15pm
The team celebrate their 40th anniversary by trying to raise money for John Cleese's divorce.

Sid! By Those Who Really Knew Him, Sky Arts1, 9pm
Portrait of Sid Vicious with exclamation mark in the title.

SUNDAY

Tarrant Lets The Kids Loose, Watch, 6pm
Beadle's About with kids. As discussed in yesterday's Bite.

Emma, BBC1, 9pm
The delightful Romola Garai stars in a very decent Austen adaptation.

South Bank Show, ITV1, 10.15pm
How rubbish is Alison Jackson? Very. And she's got a show about Andy Warhol. That's so irritating that tvBite is glad the South Bank Show is ending.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND EVERYONE.

Here's Robert Popper being quite funny
